On 14th January 2013, The General Manager of the Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra and the Executive Director for ECPAT in Cambodia signed a groundbreaking document for the hospitality industry in Cambodia.

As a result of a meeting between the General Manager of the Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra and the Project Manager of the Code Organization and with a common vision of promoting good practices to counteract child sexual exploitation in the tourism industry, Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra signed the Code of Conduct under the honorary patronage of the General Manager, Mr. Charles-Henri Chevet and ECPAT Cambodia‘s Executive Director Mr. Chin Chanveasna. ECPAT Cambodia became a Local Code Representative (LCR) in 2011.

By signing the code of conduct, the Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra will establish an ethical policy against the commercial sexual exploitation of children; train its personnel at all levels; introduce a clause in contracts with suppliers; prepare information by means of brochures, leaflets and home pages; provide information to local “key persons” by active cooperation with ECPAT Cambodia and the Police.

Through the signature of The Code, the Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra is committed to observing and implementing the six criteria of the Code, including annual reporting. “As an International Hotel Chain in Cambodia, we feel it is part of our responsibility to give back to the local community whenever we can. It is such an important topic these days and we believe awareness needs to be raised.”– commented Charles-Henri Chevet, the General Manager of the Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra Hotel.

“The Code of Conduct, is a milestone in raising awareness amongst the public and the hospitality industry on the problem of combating sexualexploitation of children” – said Mr. Chin Chanveasna, Executive Director of ECPAT Cambodia. In Cambodia, since 2003, 141 sex offenders have been prosecuted in the Cambodian courts, according to Action Pour Les Enfants website.
